Purchasing Cloth Diapers & Covers

I purchased my pre-fold diapers from http://www.NaturalBabies.com and the wraps directly from ProServices (http://www.prodiaper.net) at (800) 397-8594.

Pre-fold diapers are usually a rectangle divided into 3 sections made from cotton. The outer sections usually have 2 or 4 layers and the inner section has 4, 6, or 8 layers. When you look at a web site that has the diaper described as 4-6-4 this means that the outer sections of the diapers consist of 4 layers and the inner section has 6 layers. The more layers in the middle, the more absorbent the diaper is; however, the diaper will also have more bulk. So weigh this in when making your purchase.

Covers are used to go over the cloth diaper to protect clothing and other people from moisture. Covers are usually made from vinyl laminated polyester or cotton. There are covers with side closures using Velcro or snaps or there are pull-on covers. I chose to use side closures so that I did not need to use fasteners on the cloth diapers unless I wanted extra protection. I did purchase some snappis to use when I think DD is going to have a BM to offer better protection from a blowout. Snappis are pinless fasteners for diapers.

DIAPERS:

I purchased my diapers from http://www.NaturalBabies.com. I wanted to purchase my diapers locally even though I was purchasing them on the Internet. I found NaturalBabies.com on the snappi site as a local supplier. NaturalBabies.com ended up being very competitive and had the best price for shipping at only $3.95 per order or free if over the purchase is over $150.00 (* most places charged a % of the cost, or actual shipping). In the end I spent over $150.00, but this didn’t matter because I picked up my diapers at her business. Colleen allowed me to pick up the diapers even though she had a 1 month old. She also showed me how to use pre-folds with a wrap.

NaturalBabies.com
also offers to match any prices found on the Internet. I am a frugal person so I desperately tried to find a lower price; however I couldn’t find a better price.

I highly recommend http://www.NaturalBabies.com. Not only did she allow me to pick up my order and show me how to use the diapers properly, she also gave me the correct order. When I placed my order I mentioned items I would like to have that appeared to be out of inventory. She e-mailed me right away noting they were indeed in stock and modified my order for what I wanted.

I recommend at least 36 (3 dozen) diapers in each size. I purchased 2 types of diapers in Infant size. I purchased 4-6-4 and 4-8-4. I use the 4-6-4 when I’m around the house and will change the diaper regularly for less bulk on DD. I use the 4-8-4 when I go out of the house or when DD is ready for a nap for more absorbency. If I have used 4-6-4 diapers for a nap or going out, I have not had any problems with too much moisture as I still change the diapers frequently and her naps are usually only 1 – 2 hours.

COVERS:

I would recommend purchasing 8 wraps in each size from Newborn-Medium. I would use 6 for everyday, 1 for the diaperbag and 1 to keep in the car. If you do not think your child will be potty trained by 18 months then you may want to purchase 6 wraps in size large. If you think your child will be mainly potty trained by 18 months then 4 wraps will be enough. I can’t say how many wraps to get for older babies because my baby was potty trained by 18 months and then we only used covers for night and nap time.

I wanted ProRaps Classic with Velcro, 2nds. When I called ProServices at (800) 397-8594, I asked if they had any second’s available in the sizes I wanted in the Proraps Classic style. They happened to have the wraps in that day so they shipped them out and I received them within a week. The people were very friendly on the phone and answered all my questions I had about second’s. I did not feel they were a risk to purchase and they have proven work without any blow-outs or moisture wicking around the legs.

I have also purchased a few “Especially for Baby” wraps from Babies R Us (This is their own brand). I have been told this is also the Dappi brand of covers. I currently use them for travel only as I just outgrew size Small and I did not order enough ProRaps in DDs current size from ProServices. This brand of cover wicks moisture around the legs. These covers cost almost $2.00 less per wrap, but it is not worth the savings because of extra clothing that needs to be washed from the wicking around the legs.

I have not found it to be inconvenient to use cloth when I am out of the house. I carry an extra Ziploc or diaper trash bags for the diapers. I also plan on making a diaper dry bag so that I can wash the bags with the diapers.
