Summary on Cloth Diaper Purchase & Usage:
Using cloth diapers on your baby will cost about 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of disposables.
This amount will become even more cost effective if you use cloth on more than one child, as you only need to purchase cloth supplies once.
PURCHASING CLOTH DIAPERS FOR BABIES
- http://www.Diaperpin.com –Valuable Resource to see how to use cloth diapers, how suppliers are rated, and to view ratings on different types of cloth diapering systems.
- Pre-Fold diapers purchased from http:/www.NaturalBabies.com They were one of the cheapest, only charged $3.95 for S/H & they were local.
- I would purchase at least 3 dozen diapers in 2 sizes. I used Infant & Regular, But you could substitute Premium for regular if you expect to have a chubby child or have them in diapers longer than 2 1/2 years.
- ProServices (http://www.prodiaper.net) - I called (800) 397-8594) to purchase Prorap classics, 2nds for $4.50 each plus shipping. When I placed my order I specifically stated I wanted seconds in the ProRap Classics and they arrived in 3-4 days.
- I should have purchased 8 wraps in each size from Newborn-Medium. I would use 6 for everyday, 1 for the diaperbag and 1 to keep in the car. For my first, I did this with 6 in each size, but realized I needed more.
- I only purchased 3 size Large wraps because DD was only using cloth diapers at nap time by 18 months. With 3 wraps, I have an extra in the car and 2 for nap time. If you do not expect to be potty trained 18 months you could use 6 wraps at this stage as babies generally have fewer BMs a day and void less oftern.
- Making contour diapers from pre-folds: http://www.mama2mama.org/contours.html (I tried this and found pre-folds work just as good with blow-outs.
LAUNDERING
- Spin diapers through a rinse cycle to get out any extra solid waste.
- I soak stained diapers overnight in Oxygen bleach and Bac-Out by Bi-o-Kleen.
- If still stained I hang in the sun to bleach the stains out.
- Do NOT use chlorine bleach or Borax as it eats the
cotton fibers.
- Wash wet diapers with detergent & baking soda then double rinse.
Other Resources
- Making your own diaper bag with Nylon Ripstop 2nds that is silicone Coated. Cloth was purchased from http://www.noahlamport.com/store.
- I will need to purchase 10 yards. However, if I just make 2 diaper pail liners and 1 dry bag for my diaper bag, it will cover the cost of purchasing already made liners from a store.
- After making 4 pail liners and 3 diaper dry bags I will have about 8 ½ yards left and still be saving money.
- Learn about Infant Potty Training and be done with diapering sooner.
