Splash in the make shift pool

Age: *6 mo. – 2 years *(child must be able to sit up in a highchair)
Can be modified to 2-4 years

Rational:
Some children like to splash in the tub or pool, but sometimes it is too time consuming to fill the pool. This way you just take the child outside and watch him splash away in the highchair tray.

Prep Time: 2-4 minutes
Clean up time: 2-5 minutes
Cost of materials: negligible if you pay for city water.

** NOTE Adult supervision is necessary at all times for this activity as it only takes only ΒΌ inch of water for an infant to drown and slightly more for a toddler.

Materials needed:

  • Highchair with a tray that has a lip and contains no holes.
    ++ You may want to remove the highchair cover before this activity.
  • Towels
  • Water container
  • Water
Modifications for older children:
  • Tray at a picnic table or used on a TV tray

Rules/ How to play:
Take a highchair outside or place the highchair on a piece of plastic with towels under it.
Place the child in the highchair & buckle them in.
Lock the tray onto the highchair.
Pour water into the tray.
Stand back and watch them splash!

You may want to remove children’s clothing or put them in a swim suit before this activity.

Skills/ Goals:
Physical :
- Gross motor – Measured by raising arms above head and bringing them down to the tray.
- Fine motor – Measured by Wiggling hands in the tray of water.
Science:
- Use the sense of touch to investigate natural phenomena (water).
- Explore natural phenomena (water) and make observations (Cause & Effect).
