Weight Management Applications

I have lost over 50 pounds in the past year!

For the first 6 months I lost 20 pounds by having a baby and breast feeding. The next 15 pounds was lost by cuting out snack foods in our home, with the biggest snack being Ice Cream. In the past few months I have also started to attend Weight Watchers® meetings with another 15 pound reduction by using their Points® plan.

Some Weight Management type applications I have found helpful over the past few months to make wiser meal decisions are listed below:

Visit http://www.rjrudy.org/ and find out how to receive spreadsheets to help with your weight loss journey (The information is at the bottom of the front page.) This is very similar to what you can do on the Weight Watchers® web site, only it is free from this site. I have used this spreadsheet for calculating recipe values and for storing my regularly used meals values.
The Spread Sheets include

  1. recipe builder - input the ingredients & servings and it will spit out the value per serving.

  2. Weight journal-updated (has all the info for building recipes, calculating values and keeping a weekly journal. It also features a tab to keep the values of items you frequently eat.

  3. Weight log (can input data for 1 year. It will create graphs and other fun stuff

  4. An old spread sheet

Another site that has good information; however it is VERY hard to look at is http://www.DWLZ.com

  • DWLZ.com has a link to download an application for the PalmPilot that has many restaurants and the values for their food along with the nutrition information ( http://dwlz.com/palmpilot.html .) I have used this program and find it is great to have on hand for when you eat on the fly without eating too much.
  • This same link (http://dwlz.com/palmpilot.html ) also has html files of the same restaurant information if you want to lookup the value on your computer or hand held before you dine out. I try to have a backup choice on hand incase they run out of an item if I look up the food before I go out…

The USDA has a program where you can lookup the nutrition information on many commonly used foods including some commercial foods. The program has been converted for a Palm or Desktop use. I’ve used the program to lookup ingredients when I’ve thrown out the wrapper for the item. I also like that it has the nutrition value on some items for after they are cooked. For instance 1 link of pork sausage has .65 less fat grams once it is cooked and therefore fewer calories at only 81 kcal/link verses 85 kcal/link.

If you are having trouble finding one of the applications listed above because corporate America has asked them to pull their information from the internet, you can go to http://www.waybackmachine.org/ . Here you will be able to look up any modifications to web sites and see if the data is still archived somewhere.
