Repairable BumGenius diaper review

Conclusion: They are WORTH the price if you have a seam ripper and can sew a semi straight line!!!! I prefer the 3.0 to the 2.0 and have found them to be worth the extra $3.50.

So far on all 14 of mine I have only needed to have the elastic replaced on 5 and 1 Velcro tab needed to be sewn back together and I did this eventually. I also decided to replace the laundry taps to make it easier for doing the laundry. I replaced the velcro tabs that were curling as well so they wouldn’t catch on clothing. This was not done right away, but became annoying enough that I wanted to do this

PRO:
*Cost $5.00 (2.0) or $8.50 (3.0) each or about 1/3 to 1/4 of the new price.
*I replaced my full diaper stash with for under $100 including microfiber towel inserts.
*Easy inexpensive fixes.
*Still have lots of life once the fixes are made
*PUL and suede cloth seem to be in great condition.
*A tutorial for fixing elastic on repairable BumGenius diapers can be found on the diaperswappers.com web site.
*If the change is too difficult you could sell them on Craig’s list or DiaperSwappers for about the same price minus the shipping or find a friend to fix diapers.
* One repaired can be sold for more than you purchased them for!

CON:
*It takes some time to do the seam ripping and sewing. I estimate that it took about 30 minutes for the first diaper, but the more diapers you purchase the less time it takes per diaper. Over all it took about 4 hours to rip & sew 12 diapers. I did the seam ripping over time while I watched TV and the sewed on a weekend. I replaced the laundry tabs and Velcro tabs on all of them and replaced the elastic on 5 of them.
*They do not come with inserts. A low cost insert can be made from Microfiber Towels for about $11 for 24
*The diapers are used and may have minor staining; however they are prewashed. None of mine have had stains anywhere on the diapers.
*2.0s only: If you have a fast peeing child you may have leaking around the waist if you use hemp or forget to have your boy point South. This is where the 3.0s are worth the price so you don’t have to change clothing as often.

OVERVIEW
I have found Repairable BumGenius diapers to be worth their price and the convenience of a 1 size pocket diaper has been nice; although I must do laundry every 2 days or the laundry load is too large to be cleaned effectively. This is if I only use pocket diapers.

Repairable BumGenius diapers seem to be listed at the end of the month on the clearance page at http://www.cottonbabies.com/

These diapers are used, repairable diapers that are returned because they need Velcro or elastic repairs.

I sewed the elastic on with a size 14 universal needle using a 3 step zigzag stitch to affix the elastic to the diaper.
The laundry tabs can be sewn on with a 14 universal as well. Make sure you sew either an x through the rectangle or at least a / so that the tab stays put when you take the Velcro off.

You should then use a straight stitch to top stitch the elastic into a casing using a 11 sharp needle. I did not sew the casing at first and had poo leaks where I did not put the elastic back into a casing.

Laundry tabs that don’t work are annoying because you have to hook the Velcro together with the diaper inside out. Although I waited to do this because I didn’t think it was necessary, I am so thankful that I did.

Velcro that curls out is annoying because it hooks to clothing nor can the diaper be worn without clothing on or the diaper may come off.

Cottonbabies.com has WONDERFUL customer service and they are a great company. When I called for information on the laundry tabs they were willing to send me new ones for free even though my question was just about what the material for the tabs was made from. They also sent me the Velcro tabs to fix the curling tabs. All this even though the page said they wouldn’t provide the materials to fix the diapers and for free including shipping.
