BumGenius 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0 Diaper Review
bumGenius resuable diaper (BG) 3.0, 2.0 & 1.0 Diaper Review
Summary: I highly recommend BumGenius diapers as long as they are version 2.0 or higher. As a stand alone system, this is moderately priced considering it is from birth to potty learning. Version 2.0 and higher are worth the price if you realize you may need a different type of diaper for night time use and/ or different inserts if you have a heavy wetting baby. Because you only need to purchase 1 cover for all stages I think version 2.0 and higher diapers are worth the price whether you are using them as your main system of diapering or if you just want to have a few on hand for quick diaper changes.
I would not recommend purchasing version 1.0 diapers unless you had a steal of a deal. I had them because I traded cleaning with a friend for them. I also sold all my 1.0 diapers and purchased repairable 2.0 diapers. It was worth the upgrade. It only ended up costing me time to make the repairs as I sold the diapers for the same price that I purchased the new ones for.
If you want to transition to these when children are older and wiggly, 9 diapers are good for daytime use.
If you wanted to use BumGenius diapers for your only day time system from birth I would suggest at least 12-15 diapers. Before 1 ½ or 2 months you could use 15 diapers; however you would have to wash them everyday or purchase some prefold diapers and place the diaper on top to use as a 2 part system.. After 2 months with 15 diapers you would need to wash them every 2- 3 days.
Price: New $$ About 18.00 each + tax & Shipping per diaper. Used from $5.00- $10.00 per diaper.
Pros:
You only need to purchase 1 diaper for a child from about 10 lbs. to about 30 lbs.
They are great at containing blowouts.
This is a great diaper to have in your diaper bag to make changes easier while you are out and about especially for wiggly babies
The stretchy Velcro makes for quick diaper changes on wiggly babies.
Cons: Not a good system for very heavy wetting babies for night or day without frequent changes.,
They seem bulky on small babies (To decrease bulk you can use hemp inserts which would also increase the expense); however I have heavy wetter’s, even from birth, and need the extra material so I can have it hold at least 2 voids.
Velcro stopped working, but I found out if they are put in the dryer the Velcro sticks again.
You need to be aware of wicking issues in the waist line and edges if you keep the diaper on the baby for long periods of time.
1.0 only seem to wick at the legs rather quickly because of the nylon material.
1.0 only Not all have cross over tabs so they may not work on newborns.
My Experience With BumGenius 3.0 2.0 & 1.0 Diapers
3.0 I have six 3.0 diapers purchased as repairable diapers from CottonBabies.com . The maid difference between 3.0 and 2.0 BGs is an inch of PUL that is on the inside of the diaper that touches the babies skin. The extra flap of PUL helps to keep shirts from wicking moisture at the edge of the diaper. Because my children are heavy voiders I think that it is enough of a difference to purchase these for a few dollars more than 2.0.
2.0 I have 9 one-sized BumGenius 2.0 diapers. I started out with 4 and upgraded to more as I liked the convenience. These diapers were meant to be for when babysitters came over as they are most like disposables and they were great for quick changes when we were out and about. These are perfect as my newborn could wear these along with my 2 year old. They are a trim diaper once they are on the second snap with a smaller insert and fit from 10 pounds to about 30 pounds in my experience. Even though they were bulky with the regular insert for newborns, my babies were heavy wetter’s and I needed the extra material to hold the voids. I never had a blow out even in my newborn and I LOVE how the elastic was snug around the waist and legs. I have had problems with leaking, but have found it to be a problem with all diapers I use and it is my child voiding copious quantities of liquid to be the real problem. I have also had a problem with the diaper was the Velcro coming undone, but I found that you need to dry the diapers in the dryer to “refresh” the Velcro every now and then.
I also have 8 of version 1.0 BG diapers. The cover for 1.0 BGs are made of coated nylon. These wick much more quickly than 2.0 or 3.0 versions which are made from PUL. I would not purchase this version. I did a trade to get my 1.0 and they were worth the Free price.
Separate diapers would need to be purchased for night time and/or nap time if you have a heavy wetter.
